Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has called on the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to call in a planning application for a crematorium on green belt land between near Codsall.
Plans have been submitted by Dignity UK to build the crematorium on green belt land between Wergs Hall Road, Heath House Lane and the A41 Holyhead Road between Perton, Codsall and Tettenhall, formerly part of the Wergs Hall estate.
The plans for the site were refused in 2015 by South Staffordshire Council after the proposals for the building were deemed as an inappropriate development. However they were revived citing special circumstances which overrule destruction of the green belt, principally the need for a new crematorium in the area.
Gavin has urged the Secretary of State, Sajid Javid MP to call in the planning application which has gone to public enquiry with the Planning Inspectorate.
On the plans Gavin said: “This is an application which I am vehemently opposed to and would be a gross breach of the green belt and will considerably shift the development lines in South Staffordshire.
“No matter how this is dressed up, this development constitutes nothing more than urban sprawl and will damage an important piece of green belt between the villages of Codsall, Wolverhampton and Perton and effectively go a long way in urbanising the area completely. I believe that this application should be rejected with immediate effect.”
