Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited 3 Hammers Golf Complex in Coven where he congratulated them on their recent PGA award.
3 Hammers Golf Complex won the prestigious Critchley award, one of eight President’s Awards is given to those who make a significant contribution to grassroots junior golf, in recognition of the impact in the development of grass roots junior golf, encouraging 3,000 young people to take up the sport. 3 Hammers is now recognised as a national example of good practice by the EGU, PGA and Golf Foundation.
The Complex, which is supported by England Golf and the Golf Foundation, involves 5 full time PGA Golf Professionals and two level 1 coaches to run Tri-Golf and Junior Golf Passport sessions in local primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and groups across the region such as girl guides and scouts.
Gavin also met with Club owner Ian Bonser who has run 3 Hammers for 30 years, is currently leading the campaign for UKGCOA on VAT exemption. The UK Golf Course Owners Association is calling for a level playing field over VAT rates. Currently clubs that are owned by members qualify for a VAT exemption whilst privately owned clubs pay the full rate.
Commenting on his visit Gavin said: “It was great to be shown around 3 Hammers when I visited recently and hear about the incredible impact that the club has had on young golfers in the area. Winning the PGA is such a fantastic achievement and hearing that they have encouraged over 3,000 young people into golf is inspiring.
“Anything to encourage more people to take up sporting activity is a good thing, although this must be measured against any potential financial impact. I would encourage Ministers in the Treasury to take a look at the association’s proposals and see if a review can be made.”
