Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited St Andrew’s church, Great Wyrley to join them for celebrations for the church’s 50th birthday.
The church, whose foundation stone was laid on 30th April 1966, celebrated their 50th birthday celebrating the history of the church within the community, looking back on 50 years of events, celebrations and group activities.
Gavin joined the weekend of events, which began on Saturday, with an Open Day Drop-In and heard from the Great Wyrley Historical Society and viewed displays from different local community groups including the Youth Group held at the church on Friday nights.
Festivities continued with a 60s music night with a bring-and-share meal in the evening followed by a commemorative Holy Communion the following morning led by the Archdeacon of Lichfield. The Venerable Simon Baker.
After the event Gavin said: “I greatly enjoyed my visit to the St. Andrew’s to join the Church in their 50th birthday celebrations and I would like to thank all those who helped organise the two days of events to celebrate this important occasion.
“It is clear from the amount of people who attended the event and listening to the contributions from those groups who had displays there that St Andrew’s has played an incredibly important role to Great Wyrley residents over the past five decades.”
