Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, attended a reception hosted by the Motor Neurone Disease Association last week to mark MND Awareness Month.
The MND Association was founded in 1979 by a group of volunteers with experience of living with or caring for someone with MND. We are the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on MND care, research and campaigning. Our vision is of ‘A world free from MND’. Until that time, we will do all we can to enable people with MND to maximise their quality of life and die with dignity.
More than 130 volunteers from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland attended the event in Westminster in the House of Commons last week.
Earlier the same day the Chief Executive of the MND Association Sally Light and Association Patron and ITV Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins were joined by people affected by MND to hand in a petition to Downing Street. The MND Charter, signed by more than 33,500, calls for the right care, in the right place at the right time for people with MND and their carers.
Gavin was previously Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Motor Neurone Disease where he co-hosted numerous events to raise awareness for the disease.
Commenting on the event, Gavin said: “I was delighted to attend the MND Reception last week to mark MND Awareness Month. I know many of my constituents hae family members who are affected by MND or have heard about the impact of this devastating disease.
“MND Awareness month is a great opportunity for people to show support for sufferers of the condition. It’s so important that we raise awareness for this terrible disease so we can do everything we can to start finding a cure.”
