Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, is urging Ministers to instigate tougher measures for prisoners on day release.
Gavin wrote to The Rt Hon Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Justice, after constituents raised concerns with him about recent instances of prisoners using their day release as an opportunity to abscond.
He sought reassurance from the Secretary of State that tougher measures will be put in place and that those who have previously absconded will not be granted day release again.
Gavin also requested that thorough checks be initiated to ensure that individuals who are given the privilege of leaving prison for a day do not pose a threat to local residents.
Gavin said: “A primary purpose of prisons is to protect society from dangerous criminals. When they are released into the surrounding community, with insufficient protections, local residents are put at risk. This is completely unacceptable.
“It is absurd that prisoners should even be put in a position where they can abscond. Proper safeguards need to be put in place and local residents deserve reassurance that where a prisoner has once absconded, they will never be granted the privilege of a day release again.”
