Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has welcomed the announcement that Westfield Community High School football team will be competing in the National Finals of the Danone Nations Cup, this Saturday 24th May 2014.
The FIFA approved tournament is being held at Bodymoor Heath, Aston Villa’s training ground.
More than three thousand schools have competed in the event, which is run by the England Schools’ Football Association and is the world’s biggest football tournament for 10 to 12 year olds.
The Westfield football team successfully progressed through the county knockout rounds of the tournament and triumphed at the regional finals held last month to earn its place at the national finals.
Victory at Bodymoor Heath would result in the school being crowned national champions.
Gavin said: “This is incredible news and I wish Westfield Community Primary School’s football team the best of luck when it competes , this weekend. To reach the final is an incredible achievement and acts as a huge testament to the talent and hard work of the individual team members.
“Events such as the Danone Cup do much to inspire young players and encourage them to fulfil their potential. British sport has continued to flourish over the past few years and I have no doubt that we can expect great things of our current generation of young athletes.”
The Danone Nations Cup is a Change 4 Life partnership and also an ‘Inspired by 2012’ programme.
The national final is an annual highlight in Danone’s programme of support for healthy lifestyles through education and fun, which includes Eat Like a Champ.
Eat Like a Champ is another Change 4 Life partnership programme, which seeks to promote good nutrition and healthy lifestyles to primary schools children.
