Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has welcomed the £64,826,072 of Government funding for new school places in Staffordshire, from 2011-2015.
Figures show that funding for new school places across the country has increased to £5 billion in 2011-15, more than double that spent by Labour – who actually cut school places by 200,000. A further £2.35 billion of funding has also been announced for 2015/17.
Local schools in Staffordshire area will receive an extra £54,583,308 in funding than they received under Labour.
Commenting, Gavin said: “Labour were warned repeatedly that they hadn’t done enough to plan for a growing population – instead they actually cut places in the middle of a baby boom. That’s why I welcome the swift action taken by the Government to double the funding for school places across the country, including £64,826,072 for new school places in Staffordshire. This will deliver 3930 extra primary places by 2016.
“This is one extremely positive step for local schools. However, I am continuing my campaign to bring an end to inequalities in school funding – that the Government inherited - which mean pupils in South Staffordshire continue to receive less money per head than those in neighbouring areas such as Wolverhampton.”
