Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, experienced what it was like to be blind on Friday when he went on a walk with a Guide Dog around Codsall.
The walk was organised by Shrewsbury Guide Dogs, was met by Andy Guiel and guide dog Natalie and was given a brief talk about how owners cope with loss of sight. Gavin then learned how to handle a guide dog as well as learning some of the brief commands that guide dog owners use daily.
After mastering the basic commands between guide dog and owner Gavin and Natalie were taken on a short journey by bus to demonstrate the how difficult daily tasks such as public transport can be to those that are blind or partially sighted.
Gavin has previously attended events around the constituency to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Gavin said: “I very much enjoyed my walk with Natalie and the Guide Dog team last week. It was so interesting to learn of the challenges that those who are blind and partially sighted face every single day. It is an important topic that I feel that we should learn more about and Andy and his team do a fantastic job representing the organisation. I have highlighted with the Secretary of State for Transport the need for talking buses which would enormously help those that live with sight loss.”
