Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, today met with volunteers who drive for Local Village Transport in Perton.
Local Village Transport is one of several Voluntary Car and Community Transport schemes based in across South Staffordshire in Pattingham, Perton Bilbrook and Codsall.
Staffed by volunteer drivers, the transport schemes help less mobile people get to hospitals, medical appointments and essential shopping trips. They also help many elderly or less mobile people travel, often living in areas without easy access to public transport, escape from their isolation.
Chris Welch, CEO, Community Council of Staffordshire says, “We are pleased that the benefits of the scheme have been recognised by councillors and the local MP. The provision of funding from the four parish councils in the area helps us to maintain this essential car service for members of our community, who are most in need.”
Gavin said: “I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to meet volunteers and to talk to a few of the local residents who use this wonderful service. For people with mobility issues or without easy access to private or public transport, life in the countryside can prove extremely difficult. Something as simple as a weekly shop can be a huge obstacle to overcome.
“Without the hours given by the selfless volunteers this excellent scheme would not exist. The voluntary driving schemes are a vital service for many local residents and can provide them with that little bit of assistance that enables them to stay in their home.”
Bookings can be made on Monday/Wednesday and Thursday between 9am and 1pm by calling 01902 696683 or e-mail to neill.morris-hobley@staffs.org.uk for journeys any day of the week subject to drivers availability.
