Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has urged the Chief Executive of the Council to support concerned residents of Wedges Mills who are petitioning against speeding through the village as well as an increase in freight traffic.
Residents contacted Gavin after they had canvassed support for their petition from over 120 residents who are extremely concerned about the speed, volume, safety, noise and vibrations on the A4601. As well as their petition villagers have penned a report and take part in a Community Speedwatch programme.
The members of the Wedges Mills Community Speedwatch group have noted that an average of 30 drivers an hour are breaking the speed limit, with some hitting speeds of 50mph.
Both the report and the petition has been endorsed by the Saredon Council and will be presented to Staffordshire County Council.
Commenting on the issue Gavin said: “It is quite obvious to me there is very clear support for action to be undertaken and I urge the Chief Executive of the Council to look carefully at this issue.
“It is extremely important that traffic calming measures are put in place. We cannot put a cost on the safety of Wedges Mills residents and drivers, whose lives are put at risk by careless drivers on this road. I would like to thank the volunteers with the Wedges Mills Community Speedwatch Group who have campaigned hard to gather support from residents to make their voices heard.
“I will continue to push for a resolution on this matter until sufficient measures are put in place to ensure that cars keep within the designated speed limit. Action needs to be taken to safeguard local people, before it is too late.”
