Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, is urging English Heritage and Severn Trent to take action on the Bratch Pumping Station, in Wombourne.
Gavin met with the Friends of the Bratch over the weekend to discuss the building, after discovering that they were looking at disbanding, due to lack of access to the site.
The Bratch Pumping Station and pumping equipment, which are owned Severn Trent, are Grade 2* Listed.
However, the pumping station has fallen into a state of disrepair following years of neglect.
Gavin is urging English Heritage and Severn Trent to make urgent repairs to the building and to reveal what plans are in place to secure its long term future.
Gavin said: “The Bratch Pumping Station is a major local landmark and part of our industrial heritage. It is shameful that it has been allowed to fall into this sad state of disrepair.
“I am getting in touch with English Heritage and Severn Trent to urge them to take action on this matter. We need to know what plans Severn Trent has to secure the long term future of this important, historical building. I am sure that we would all like to see this building put to a use that would ensure its survival for future generations.”
The Grade 2* Bratch Pumping Station at Wombourne is one of only 50 remaining steam pumping stations in England.
Built in 1895 by Bilston Corporation, it comprises a wonderful Gothic style ‘fairy castle’ pumphouse, within which are two huge vertical triple expansion steam engines. These were used for 65 years to raise pure drinking water from deep boreholes, and pump it to a purpose built reservoir in Wolverhampton.
