South Staffordshire MP, Gavin Williamson was delighted to join members of the Friends of Kinver Open Spaces Group as they unveiled their proposal to reinstate Sterrymere Lake. The Group are hoping that their £110,000 plan will transform the eyesore into a haven for wildlife once again.
Sterrymere lake used to be fed by the Mill Brook but when this dried out the lake slowly became empty in the 1950s and it is now just scrub land. The plan received the go ahead from the planning authorities earlier this year and if it goes ahead the dried up lake will be refilled with water and the surrounding land will be cleared and replanted. Wildlife such as otters, fish and bats will be reintroduced to the lake when it is reinstated.
David Tibbetts, Project Manager of Friends of Kinver Open Spaces Group says of the plans:
‘This is about transforming an area of wilderness which is currently an absolute eyesore near the centre of the village. We want to reinstate the lake and bring life back to the area. Once open I believe it could attract 5,000 visitors a month and be a perfect supplement to the nearby bowling green, football pitches and skate park.’
Commenting on the unveiling Gavin Williamson MP said:
‘It really would be wonderful if we were able to reinstate the lake. I am helping the scheme by talking to potential investors and raising public awareness as we will need every penny we can find to help get this really worthwhile project off the ground.’
