Sir Gavin Williamson visited St Dominic’s Priory in Stone and discussed various topics including the Government’s decision to impose 20% VAT on private school fees.
As well as touring the school, Sir Gavin spoke with students and expressed his disappointment with the Government’s decision to scrap VAT relief – which is having a detrimental impact on many families across Staffordshire.
St Dominic’s Priory was established in 1843. Founded by Margaret Hallahan, the school is a Grade II listed building with impressive facilities including a multi-purpose sports hall.
Mrs Harrison, Headteacher at St Dominic’s Priory said: "We were delighted to welcome Sir Gavin to our school and show him our wonderful environment that enables us to help students reach their full potential.
"As a school, we are very committed to delivering a varied curriculum that enables students to develop both academically and as individuals.
"We thank Sir Gavin for visiting, and very much look forward to developing a positive relationship with benefits for the school and community as a whole."
Sir Gavin said: "I was delighted to visit St Dominic’s Priory and see all the amazing facilities enjoyed by pupils.
"The school strives for success and has dedicated teaching staff that focus on supporting pupils both academically and socially.
"The Government’s decision to impose VAT on private school fees is highly disruptive to the sector and fails to understand the implications for ordinary families and children with SEND. I will continue to stand up against these disastrous policies.”
