Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited members of the Brain Tumour Support Group in Wolverhampton to learn more about the group and the support that they offer.
The group is open to anyone who has been affected by a brain tumour, whether they are a patient, a family member, a friend or carer. Meetings are held at Light House Coffee Shop at The Chubb Buildings on Fryer Street on the second Thursday of each month, at 1.00 – 2.30pm.
The group environment is relaxed and friendly, hosting a variety of speakers and sharing their information and experience amongst members. The group is run by Brain Tumour Support, a local charity funded by donations and money raised by local businesses.
Gavin spoke to members about their own experience with brain tumours and learnt more about how the group supports one another.
Members of the group raised their own concerns with the accessibility to resources and the treatment process along with the need for more information and support groups like their own to encourage those that have been affected by brain tumours to have focussed support on getting them back to work and having the confidence to raise questions with medical professionals and support counsellors.
Rosemary Wormington, Head of Support for the charity lost her daughter to a brain tumour, thanked Gavin for visiting the group. “We were so pleased that Gavin came to the group to hear for himself the difficulties and concerns affecting people diagnosed with a brain tumour. He was obviously keen to listen and took on board the issues raised.”
Speaking on his visit Gavin said: “It was an honour to meet members of the Wolverhampton Brain Tumour Support Group and hear of their experiences. This wonderful local charity provides invaluable support to those who have had experience with brain tumours. The support that they offer is so important to people that are going through the worst time in their lives and really offers the members a great deal of hope and encouragement.
“I listened carefully to the concerns of the members and will be taking up their concerns regarding the accessibility to resources and treatment with Ministers and also at New Cross hospital."
