Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, is urging local schools to take part in the UK’s first National Vote Registration Day (NVRD) on February 5th 2014.
The aim of the day is simple - to empower future generations of young people to realise that they have a say and a stake in decisions affecting their future.
This annual day of coordinated action will see businesses, community groups and schools registering thousands of eligible young voters, showing them how and why they should take part in our democratic system.
The campaign organisers, Bite the Ballot, have created a range of free resources for students and teachers to run registration events.
Interested schools can sign up by visiting www.nvrd.co.uk/takepart, where they can also obtain the latest resources and videos from Bite the Ballot.
On the occasion, Gavin said: “It is extremely important that our young people are encouraged to take part in the democratic system that is their birthright.
“This day, which takes place 180 years after the Great Reform Act, is a wonderful opportunity for students over 16 to register to vote and learn a little bit more about their political heritage.”
