Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited Wombourne 3rd Girl Guides during one of their recent meetings on Mill Lane, Wombourne.
Gavin spoke to the Guides about his role as an MP and what his new job as the Chief Whip entails. The discussion later moved onto local issues in South Staffordshire as well as the important topic of getting more women into politics. The Guides asked Gavin numerous questions about how they could become an MP in the future and how people could encourage other women to get involved in the top jobs in politics.
Gavin also spoke about his work experience growing up and told them about the programme he runs, having over 30 work experience placements a year in both in his Codsall and Westminster offices.
After his visit Gavin said: “I had such a brilliant discussion with the Guides about getting more women into politics. I think it’s fantastic that they are taking such an interest in seeing how we can get more women into Parliament, especially now we have another female Prime Minister.
“I think it is wonderful that young people are asking about how they can get involved in politics. I found my work experience in Westminster extremely rewarding when I was younger and it is a privilege to have so many people in South Staffordshire take part in the work experience programme that I run. It was a pleasure to meet with all the girls and hear about what issues they think are important both locally and nationally. I would not be surprised if I saw some of them as MPs one day!”
