Sir Gavin Williamson visited Landywood Snooker Club in Great Wyrley to mark the start of The World Billiards Championship (WBC)
The WBC is an internationally recognised tournament and is one of the oldest sporting world championships, having been contested (though irregularly) since 1870. The tournament has been held at Landywood Snooker Club for the past three years.
Director Paul Lloyd has significantly transformed Landywood Snooker Club following a modern refurbishment that includes 12 snooker and billiards tables, a bar, and TV’s that show live sporting matches.
Snooker has substantial benefits to the UK economy with the World Championships alone contributing £4.5 million to the city of Sheffield where it is held as well as 12,000 visitors over 17 days.
Director Paul Lloyd said: “We were delighted to welcome back our local MP Sir Gavin Williamson to the club. Sir Gavin is a great champion of snooker and billiards. We are delighted that he Chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group for snooker in championing the sport in Parliament and in recognising the community value and importance of local clubs such as Landywood.”
Sir Gavin said: “I was delighted to once again visit Landywood Snooker Club and mark the beginning of the prestigious World Billiards Championship.
“Hosting this internationally recognised tournament demonstrates the tremendous work undertaken by Paul and his team to deliver first-class facilities in a warm and friendly environment.
“It is great to see the transformation of Landywood Snooker Club and I know how much it is valued by residents in Great Wyrley, Cheslyn Hay, and beyond.”
