Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, joined groups of volunteers to sell poppies in Codsall, Bilbrook and Perton at the weekend to raise money for The Royal British Legion.
Gavin began the morning with members of the 4th Codsall Rangers who were selling poppies on Station Road and then met with Cadets from the 2078 Boscobel Squadron ATC sold their poppies outside the co-op in Codsall before meeting Bilbrook Cubs and Scouts in Bilbrook. He then travelled to Perton to meet Royal British Legion volunteer Clive Rathbone who fundraises every year for the charity.
The Royal British Legion in Staffordshire has 66 branches with 8 groups, 13 clubs and over 7,500 members around the county. The Royal British Legion in Staffordshire is the leading ex-Service organisation in the county that supports around 9 million people in the UK.
This year the Royal British Legion is asking the nation to ‘Rethink Remembrance’ by recognising the sacrifices made not just by the Armed Forces of the past, but by today’s generation too.
Commenting on his afternoon with the volunteers Gavin said: “Although it was a very cold morning, I very much enjoyed my selling poppies with the Rangers, Cubs, British Legion volunteers and Cadets from the 2078 Boscobel Squadron in Codsall and Perton
“Every year volunteers across the country support the work of Royal British Legion, selling of poppies right across South Staffordshire. The money raised provides such valuable support to so many veterans and military families across the country.
“I urge everyone to keep in mind those who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom during the moment of silence during the Remembrance commemorations and on Remembrance Day itself.”
