Sir Gavin Williamson celebrated World Book Day on 5th March 2026 and in doing so has encouraged all children in Staffordshire to take part.
Research shows that reading for pleasure seriously improves children’s lives and is the biggest indicator of success in later life – regardless of parents’ economic income. However, latest statistics show that only one in three children say they enjoy reading. World Book Day encourages children to dress as their favourite book character as well as immerse in their world; hopefully improving enjoyment of reading.
Fiona Hickley, Executive of World Book Day said: “World Book Day is a joyful and vibrant celebration of reading for fun, and it’s all about inspiring children to see reading differently.
“We are delighted to have Sir Gavin’s support to show that reading can be something exciting and not a chore. By taking away pressure and giving children the freedom to choose a book they want to read, we can show them that it is a fun, entertaining, and social thing to do.”
Sir Gavin said: “World Book Day is a fantastic way to show how fun and life-changing reading can be. Not only does reading improve children’s vocabulary and imagination, but it allows them to express themselves in a unique way.
“Reading has so many benefits from improving mental health all the way through to enhancing employment and further education opportunities. I am delighted to see so many schools in Staffordshire encourage children to take part.
“I would encourage all children to find a book they enjoy and begin their reading journey – a lifetime of adventure awaits.”
