Sir Gavin Williamson has called for increased dementia support including providing early access to the State Pension for those with early on-set dementia.
Sir Gavin recently met with Brewood Dementia Group and its members shared harrowing stories of how their lives have been changed due to their loved ones being diagnosed with dementia.
Members of the group discussed the importance of having financial security, with loved ones forced to give up their job following a dementia diagnosis. One of the ways this could be achieved, would be early access to the State Pension.
Sir Gavin has called for the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to urgently review how the Government can do more to support those with dementia as well as their family. In addition, Staffordshire currently has no Admiral Nurses.
Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses, who help people living with dementia stay independent for longer. They work in local community services, GP practices, and NHS hospitals, care homes, and hospices.
A spokesperson for Brewood Dementia Group, said: “Dementia doesn’t just affect the person with the diagnosis, everyone around them is also affected. It is estimated 15,000 people are diagnosed with dementia living in Staffordshire – this is estimated to increase by 50% by 2040.
“Dementia can impact on families’, social, physical, and financial needs – it does not discriminate on gender, ethnicity, or age.”
Sir Gavin said: “Dementia is a cruel illness that has devatstaing consequences for the sufferer, their friends, and family. We must do all we can to support those with the condition, as well as their family and friends.
“I welcomed the opportunity to meet with Brewood Dementia Group and it was very emotional to hear about how so many lives have been impacted by dementia.
“I am calling on the Government to look at ways to ease the financial burden on dementia sufferers and their families. This can be achieved by allowing those with younger on-set dementia early access to their State Pension.
“We must also look at improving clinical support that is available in Staffordshire. It is truly disappointing that there are no Admiral Nurses in Staffordshire, and I will be doing everything I can to ensure that appropriate support is available as well as being easily accessible.”
Dementia advisers at Alzheimer’s Society are able to provide post diagnostic support across Staffordshire. People need to know there is post diagnostic support available. For further advice, please call 03331503456.
