Sir Gavin Williamson recently visited Oak Tree Farm Rural Project, located on Sandon Road, Hilderstone, to meet staff and participants and learn more about the vital opportunities the project provides for adults with learning difficulties.
Oak Tree Farm Rural Project offers training and supported occupational opportunities for 46 team members, supported by 12 dedicated staff. The team engages in a wide range of activities including painting, pottery, arts and crafts, willow weaving, woodwork, and traditional farm work. These activities help build skills, confidence, and a sense of community among participants.
During his visit, Sir Gavin toured the farm and its facilities, including the on-site shop where pottery and crafts made by team members are sold. He also visited the tea room which uses fruit and vegetables grown on the farm, and discussed future plans for the development of a new wildlife pond project.
The proposed pond will provide an educational and therapeutic space for team members, enhance local biodiversity, and create additional opportunities for environmental learning and conservation work.
Oak Tree Farm operates through a combination of team member contributions and generous community donations. Its close ties to the local area include supplying flowers to the parish council for community use.
Sir Gavin said: “I was delighted to visit Oak Tree Farm Rural Project and meet the incredible team members and staff. It is inspiring to see how this project provides not only valuable training but also fosters independence, creativity, and social connection.
“The work being done at Oak Tree Farm is a shining example of the strength and compassion found within our local communities. I am especially excited about the plans for the new wildlife pond, which will offer both educational and environmental benefits for the team and the wider community. I will continue to support their efforts and the positive impact they have across our area.”
