Sir Gavin Williamson MP visited a migraine awareness talk organised by pharmaceutical research company AbbVie to reinforce his support for those living with this neurological, debilitating condition.
The event aimed to unmask the hidden impact of migraines, which affect around 10 million adults in the UK as of 2021 and often go unrecognised in terms of their effects on day-to-day quality of life, mental health and employment opportunities.
AbbVie used the event to highlight the need for greater Government support for individuals who suffer from migraine, calling for employment policies aligned with the Get Britain Working scheme that help those with chronic conditions to return to work.
Sir Gavin was presented with data from spokespeople on the impact of migraines on the economy, with high rates of absence, limited productivity and the stigma within the workplace.
Sir Gavin said, “I was grateful for the opportunity to attend this important event and I commend AbbVie for shining a light on migraine within the workplace.”
“It is clear that we need to do more to ensure individuals with migraine are not left behind.”
“I look forward to working closely with colleagues across Government to turn awareness into actions.”
