Sir Gavin Williamson celebrated the rollout of life-saving defibrillators across Nationwide by visiting the Penkridge branch.
Nationwide, which has the UK’s largest branch network, has installed the publicly accessible equipment at 37 branches across the Midlands.
The installations form part of Nationwide’s commitment to equip all 605 of its branches with defibrillators and bleed control kits by the end of the year, with Virgin Money branches set to follow.
Research shows that 85% of people surveyed across the Midlands would feel safer knowing life-saving equipment is available in their local area.
Mandy Beech, Director of Retail Services at Nationwide, said: “Our research shows people in the Midlands value having access to life-saving equipment, but many would not feel confident using it in an emergency.
“That is why we are not just installing defibrillators and bleed kits, but every Nationwide branch colleague in the Midlands has the opportunity to receive first-aid training, and we are working with St John’s Ambulance to help more people gain the skills that could help save a life.”

Whilst I very much hope neither will ever be used, these life-saving devices are extremely important, can be accessed easily if appropriate, and provide reassurance to the community.
