Over 4,000 South Staffordshire residents to date have signed a petition against building on greenbelt land at Landywood Lane, between Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay.
The proposed development of 141 homes was recently thrown out by South Staffordshire District Council. However, it has since gone to the Planning Inspectorate where it risks being passed.
Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has continued to campaign against the development since the proposal was first submitted to the District Council.
Speaking at a recent public meeting, he said: “These proposals will lead to the erosion of the distinct identity of our individual villages and could cause substantial environmental damage, as well as a potential risk of flooding”.
Gavin has promised to present his final petition to the House of Commons, requesting that all possible steps are taken to protect the Greenbelt for future generations.
On the response from residents to the petition, Gavin said: “With over 4,000 signatures already on this petition, the opinion of local residents is overwhelmingly clear. They do not want this development.
“To go ahead with building these homes would have a massive impact not just on existing residents of both Cheslyn Hay and Great Wyrley, but also on future generations. Once we build on our green belt land, we can never get it back. I strongly hope that the authorities will take account of this petition and make the right decision.”
Residents will need to return any additional petition forms within three weeks, as Gavin hopes to present the petition early in the New Year.
