Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, is urging local schools to get involved in the new Inspiring Women campaign.
The Inspiring Women campaign will see 15,000 women from a wide range of occupations going into state schools over the next year to speak to 250,000 young women.
It seeks to ensure that no matter where they live and what their social background, girls should have the chance to meet a wide range of people doing different jobs, from apprentices to CEOs.
Inspiring Women is part of the successful Inspiring the Future programme, launched in October at an event hosted by Miriam Gonzalez Durantez.
Young women from 11 state secondary schools had a chance to speak about careers with 10 high profile women – including Mumsnet founder Carrie Longton, broadcaster Fiona Bruce and EasyJet CEO Carolyn McCall.
Thousands of successful women have signed up to talk to girls about their work and careers, and numerous schools are already drawing on this resource to run activities including networking/informal Q & A sessions; mock interviews and CV help; and careers fairs.
On the latest campaign, Gavin said: “We are seeing significant progress in the number of women taking up top jobs across a wide range of professions, but there is still a lot more to be done.
“This campaign will hopefully help inspire women across the country to realise their full career potential. Furthermore, it will be an opportunity for pupils to gain advice from women who have already experienced many of the challenges that they could potentially face in the workplace.”
