Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, attended the Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay Memorial Walk on Saturday as part of the South Staffordshire Walking Festival.
The programme of walks was designed around a wartime theme, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
Around 70 people attended the walk which stretched 6.5 miles across Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay. The walk began at Wesley Methodist Church and incorporated various war memorials throughout the two villages. Local historical societies from the two areas gave a presentation on events that affected the area during the war.
The walk began with a welcome from South Staffordshire District Council Chairman, Janet Johnson and ended with a moment of silence led by Great Wyrley Parish Councillor Kath Perry, to remember those who died.
Gavin said: “I had a wonderful time during the Memorial Walk, around Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay, this weekend. Fortunately, we were blessed with fantastic weather which highlighted the beautiful South Staffordshire countryside.
“The wartime history behind the villages, and the walk itself, was so interesting. It was a brilliant way to commemorate those from South Staffordshire who lost their lives, fighting for our freedom.”
