Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has slammed a proposal to build 141 new homes between the villages of Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay.
Builder Ken Lees, who runs the Cannock-based KGL Estates, recently submitted a planning application to construct the sizeable development on green belt land, off Landywood Lane, Great Wyrley.
The existing proposal also covers a park and ride facility to the nearby rail station, a new health centre, a care home and allotments.
A series of local residents have protested against the scheme, which they claim would effectively merge the two villages by eliminating the final stretch of green land between the two communities.
More than 800 residents have reportedly signed a petition against the development and a number of SOS – Save Our Space - posters have been put up around the area.
Gavin said: “I am disgusted by this proposed development. Building on green belt land should only take place in the most exceptional circumstances and I don’t believe those circumstances are met in this case.
“The villages of Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay both have their own unique identities and characteristics, which could potentially be damaged by this scheme. I am therefore urging local residents who are against this development to make their opinions known to the South Staffordshire District Council so that their views are taken into account as this application goes forward.”
