Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited the Cheslyn Hay Community Allotments on the 29th July.
The MP was given a tour of the allotments, during which he learned about the benefits that they bring to Cheslyn Hay and neighbouring Great Wyrley.
Gavin also helped to dig the first foundations for the new composting toilet facilities, made possible by £1800 of recent investment.
First given to the community in 1892, the allotments now number over a hundred plots and play host to a variety of events. Surplus produce is sold locally, with profits being donated to the Midlands Air Ambulance.
Commenting on Gavin’s visit, Committee Member Karen Higgs said: “We greatly enjoyed having Gavin come and see the allotments and we hope that he gained a greater understanding of the role they play within the Cheslyn Hay community.
“Looking forward, the Community Allotments hope to build an education centre and to develop links with local schools.”
Commenting on these plans, Gavin said: “It is fantastic to see how Cheslyn Hay Allotments is continuing to grow and to play a part in the local community. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and I wish all those involved in the project every success for the future”.
