Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, is campaigning to see that libraries in his constituency continue to be professionally staffed.
Gavin is seeking a meeting with the Council to discuss proposes changes that could potentially see many local libraries’ existing staff be replaced by community volunteers.
The plans would mean that over half of Staffordshire’s libraries would no longer be run by the County Council, potentially saving the public body £1.3 million over three years.
South Staffordshire libraries that are currently under consideration for community management include Kinver, Brewood, Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay.
Gavin said: “Whilst I very much welcome moves to keep all the current libraries open and also to involve volunteers, I do though believe there needs to be some type of professional oversight.
“For this plan to be feasible and for our libraries to continue to be run efficiently, we need – at the very least - one professional librarian to act as a co-ordinator over each local branch.
“Libraries are extremely important to many local people. Indeed, many residents rely heavily on their local library service, whether it be to access the internet or to borrow expensive books. While I commend any viable plan to keep these libraries open, I think we also need to ensure that the scheme is sustainable in the long term and the service provided does not suffer.”
