Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has welcomed figures that show claimants of Jobseekers Allowance in South Staffordshire continues to fall.
New figures released today by the Office of National Statistics show that wages are continuing to rise, and that there are a record number of women in work, thanks to the Government’s long-term economic plan.
The total number of Jobseeker's Allowance claimants in South Staffordshire in July was 684 which represents 1.4% of the working population. The number of claimants has fallen by 249 since June last year.
The figures also show that the average wage has grown by 2.8 per cent and that there are now a record 14 million women in work. The largest increase in UK workforce jobs, for March 2015, was in the West Midlands, at 40,000, with Staffordshire having the lowest number of Jobseekers Allowance claimants since 1993.
Across the West Midlands, people are getting off benefits and into work with 115, 660 more people in work since the last Labour Government. There are almost 2 million more people across the UK as a whole, now in work than at the end of thirteen years of a Labour Government.
On seeing the figures Gavin said: “I am delighted to see the claimants of JSA continue to fall across South Staffordshire. We are committed to delivering a better, more prosperous future for working people across Britain, and these figures confirm that’s exactly what our long-term economic plan is doing.
“Today’s figures show average pay growth is at 2.8 per cent, there are now a record 14 million women in work, and there are 354,000 more people in work than a year ago with the vast majority of the rise in employment coming from full-time work.
“That means more money in the pockets of hardworking people, and an economic recovery that is felt by all sections of society, whatever their background.”
