Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has welcomed falling unemployment figures in South Staffordshire.
The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in South Staffordshire has fallen by 403 claimants, to 798 people, since January 2014 which is 1.7% of the population in the constituency.
Nationally there are now a record 30.9 million people in work, with 1.85 million more people in work since the last election. The employment rate, at 73.2 per cent is also the highest on record.
This is happening because we’ve been working through our plan, backing businesses with better infrastructure and lower jobs taxes to create more real jobs, and fixing welfare so that work always pays. These jobs are not insecure or poorly paid. In fact three quarters of new jobs have been full-time and wages are rising.
Gavin said: “These figures prove that our long-term economic plan is working, with 1.85 more people back in work since 2010. Wages are now rising faster than inflation, securing a better future for hardworking people across the country.
“We now have the highest employment rate and lowest inflation rate on record. This means more people with the stability and security of a job, able to provide for themselves and their families. We know that there is more to do, which is why we need to stick with our long-term economic plan that is helping deliver economic security for hardworking taxpayers across our country.”
