Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited Brewood Ringers at the Belvide Reservoir to discuss the feathered wildlife.
Gavin met with Colin MacShane of Brewood Ringers and Sue Judge of the Belvide Reservoir to discuss the Ringing Scheme and conservation of the UK bird population.
Brewood Ringers is an organisation dedicated to the examination and conservation of UK bird species. The group uses the British and Irish Ringing Scheme, which involves placing a lightweight, uniquely numbered metal ring around a bird’s leg to provide a harmless method of identifying individual birds.
Ringing enables Brewood Ringers to track survival rates and migration patterns to understand the causes of population decline and to determine new approaches to protecting the bird population.
Gavin had the opportunity to hold a variety of birds, including a Chaffinch, Robin, Chiffchaff, Nuthatch, and Great Spotted Woodpecker.
On learning about the various bird species, Gavin said: “I am always amazed by the diversity of wildlife that we have here in South Staffordshire. I think it is so important that we do everything we can to encourage wildlife to thrive in the areas around our villages. I am delighted to be able to highlight the work that Brewood Ringers are doing to protect our diverse UK bird population for future generations. I very much enjoyed getting to know some of my feathered constituents a little better and this was certainly an experience that I will never forget.”
