Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire learned how to use a defibrillator with voluntary organisation HeartStart, an initiative of the British Heart Foundation, over the weekend.
A defibrillator is a life saving machine that is used to give the heart shocks in some cases of cardiac arrest.
Gavin learnt how to use the machine during a free HeartStart training session, which was held on Saturday morning in the Parish Rooms at St. Nicholas.
A defibrillator unit was recently installed on the wall of Lloyds Banks, in Codsall, for use in emergencies.
Local residents are currently campaigning to see units also installed in Coven and Featherstone, a step that has Gavin’s full support.
On his morning with HeartStart, Gavin said: “The training was incredible valuable and really highlighted the importance of immediate first aid. I also didn’t realise how easy the machine would be to use.
“I hope the defibrillator never needs to be used, but it is extremely comforting to know that the resource is there and I fully support residents’ campaign to seem more of these machines installed throughout South Staffordshire.”
