Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, supported the Codsall Community Cross Country Challenge at the weekend.
The race, which began at Oaken Drive, Codsall opposite Codsall Railway Station, was jointly supported by the Codsall Community Group, Codsall Parish Council and Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club after a proposal from a young Codsall resident to hold a Codsall Community Cross Country running event in and around Oaken Fields.
This community relay event was open to all ages and abilities and teams consisted of 4 runners in 7 different categories including primary school, middle school, family, workplace and male and female teams. All participants received commemorative medals to honour them taking part in the race.
Each leg of the course was approximately 1.5 miles, run on public ground, public footpaths and included a small 300m section of minor road between Oaken Lane and Oaken Drive, in Oaken village centre. Local sponsors including the Parish Council and local businesses assisted in the hosting of the event. It is hoped that after the success of the run it will become an annual event.
After the race Gavin said: “I would like to thank the Codsall Community Group, Codsall Parish Council and Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club for holding this fantastic event. We were very lucky to be blessed with such beautiful weather. Once again it is proven how our community groups come together to create such a wonderful event. The Codsall Community Group put a lot of time and effort clearing and preparing Oaken Field in preparation for the run. I do hope that this becomes an annual event and hope to come back next year.”
