Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, started the Brewood Woggle 10k adult run on Sunday and lending his support to the junior race which began earlier in the day.
The now annual charity run around Brewood was the latest fundraising venture of the 1st Brewood Scouts Fundraisers and follows from the group’s successful Cycle Challenge which took place in June.
Gavin started the race at St Dominic’s High School and took entrants on a 10 kilometre scenic run around the outskirts of Brewood which finished in the Market Place, Brewood.
A total of 94 runners signed-up for the main 10K run and 38 children took part in the three children’s races.
As with last year’s race and this year’s bike race, all proceeds went to the Brewood Scouts Fundraisers, a fundraising committee of the 2nd Brewood Scout Group set up specifically to raise funds to provide the Group with a new Scout Hut. The Scouts are hoping to see the total rise to £1,000 to help their cause.
Plans for a fourth race in 2016 are already on the table, with the success of this year’s race expected to draw a large number of applicants.
Scout leader and organiser of the race Ian Morris commented: "The third running of the Brewood Woggle was another great success with runners arriving from all over the area to take part in the 10K road race. We were delighted that Gavin attended to start the race as well as to present the prizes to the winners. The weather was kind and the event finished in the centre of the village for the first time which added to the great atmosphere. Roll on 2016!"
On the event, Gavin said: “I was delighted to have been asked to start the second of the two 10k races. I was incredibly impressed with the winner’s time of 37 minutes, who will be relieved to know that I am not considering challenging them next year. I think the Brewood Scouts Fundraisers are doing an incredible job and the amount that they have already raised is testament to their extreme hard work and dedication.”
