Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has revealed the final numbers in his referendum against the building of the DX Freight Super Hub in Hobnock Road, Essington.
Of those that responded to the referendum, 99.2% of residents agree with the concerns that Gavin raised, with final numbers revealing that 872 households across Essington agreed with Gavin that the DX Freight Super Hub should not be built.
These final figures come days after the announcement that residents will not be told of the outcome of the planning application until next year.
Issues surrounding, traffic congestion, highway safety, congestion, air pollution and the proximity to local schools has meant that the Council has to wait for a report from Highways England to be concluded.
Gavin will now write to every Councillor in South Staffordshire informing them of the results from his referendum, before presenting his findings to those responsible for planning applications at South Staffordshire District Council.
Commenting on the final figures Gavin said: "I am delighted with the extraordinary response rate from the people of Essington. Residents have spoken loud and clear and it is absolutely apparent that this development is not wanted and we have the referendum results to prove this.
“I would also like to very much welcome the delay to these plans, they are clearly crucial to getting the full picture. Roads around Essington are already far too congested and if these proposals go ahead it would only make matters much worse, not only in Essington, but also in surrounding villages such as Featherstone, Shareshill, Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay.
“I hope that the Council will take into account the results from my Referendum when making their decision on whether to reject the planning proposals. It would be irresponsible not to take into account the opinion of 44% of households in the area and I look forward to hearing from the Council very soon. ”
