Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, officially opened the Great Wyrley Local History Open Day on Saturday.
The event had a World War I theme, in recognition that next year marks the centenary of the start of the war.
In honour of the occasion, Gavin gave a short speech on the importance of preserving our heritage, the surrounding countryside and local buildings.
He also spoke about the value of recording memories and thoughts for future generations.
On the event, he said: “Our history still plays a very significant role in our present. Not only can we learn many extremely important lessons from our past, but it also makes up a significant part of our identity and who we are as a society. The Great Wyrley Local History Society does splendid work safeguarding these historical treasures and ensuring that they continue to enrich the lives of future generations.”
Expressing his delight on the day’s activities, Chairman Gary Smith said: “We specifically adapted the format and contents of the event and have since received many positive follow-up messages from the three hundred plus attendees. It could not have been achieved without a really strong team effort and the hard work of the Harrisons Club staff. Gavin's address and support was tremendous, and was much appreciated by the Society team.”
