Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has called for action to be taken to address the illegal motorcycling that is taking place on Shoal Hill Common.
A series of residents recently raised concerns with Gavin about the illegal motorcyclists, who they claimed frequently ride across the public land.
They stated that the motorcyclists were becoming increasing abusive and threatening, leading to many local people fearing for their safety when walking on the Common.
Gavin has contacted the police to request that immediate action be taken to address this matter and protect the safety of local people.
Gavin said: “This behaviour is not acceptable. Not only are these motorcyclists potentially causing severe damage to one of our most stunning natural parks, but their actions are beginning to present a serious threat to the safety of local residents.
“The police need to take immediate action to ensure that those walking on the Common are protected and that these dangerous rides are brought to a halt.”
Shoal Hill Common lies within the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and comprises 73 Hectares of Lowland Heath and Woodland.
The area is managed by the Shoal Hill Common Joint Committee and, in 1991, the Joint Committee embarked on a 10 year Countryside Stewardship Scheme to restore the declining heath land by instigating a programme of bracken, tree and scrub control and heather rejuvenation by rotational cutting.
In 2001, the Joint Committee secured a further 10 year Stewardship Agreement with DEFRA to continue the restoration works.
