Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, attended the Essington Coffee Morning over the weekend.
The coffee morning was held in aid of Delete Blood Cancer UK and raised a total of £920 for the charity.
The issue of blood cancer has received particular attention given the plight of Margot, a 16 month old child who suffers from an extremely rare form of leukemia and whose mother, Victoria Hathaway, grew up in Essington and attended St. John’s School.
In order to survive, Margot needs a blood cell donation from somebody with a similar tissue type. Thanks to a recent appeal, a donor match has now been found for her.
On the event, Gavin said: “Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer in the UK every 20 minutes. Only half of the people diagnosed in the UK find a matching donor. Charities, such as Delete Blood Cancer UK, do a huge amount to increase the pool of registered potential stem cell donors and – through this - save lives.
“I urge people to support Delete Blood Cancer and other charities like it, either by volunteering, donating funds or registering as a potential donor.”
If you are interested in becoming a potential blood donor, a registration is being held at the Mount Hotel in Wolverhampton, on Sunday 23rd February, between 10 am and 4pm.
