Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, was appointed as a Privy Counsellor by the Queen last week in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
The Privy Council, a formal body of advisers to the Queen, has a membership mostly made up of senior politicians who are or have been members of either the House of Commons or the House of Lords. After taking the oath, each Counsellor is referred to as the ‘Right Honourable’ for the rest of their lives.
Commenting on last week’s ceremony Gavin said: “Finding out that I was being appointed as a Privy Counsellor was such a wonderful surprise after the hard work of the General Election. It was such an honour and privilege to go to Buckingham Palace last week and take the oath in front of Her Majesty and I look forward to being involved with the Privy Council in the future.”
