Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has welcomed the continued record low unemployment figures, released today by the Office of National Statistics.
1,379 constituents were claiming unemployment in August 2013, a fall of 38 claimants on the previous month and 200 claimants on August 2012.
The percentage of the economically active population claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) declined by 0.1% to just 2.9 percent.
This is the lowest unemployment figure to be recorded in South Staffordshire since December 2008. It is nearly half that of the 5.5 percent West Midlands average and remained well below the national average of 4.4 percent.
The welcome news comes after several months of declining unemployment in South Staffordshire, following a local job fair that Gavin hosted in April 2013, at the Perton Civic Centre.
On the figures, Gavin said: “The continuing decline in unemployment is an excellent indicator of the ongoing success of our many local businesses, which are continuing to expand and perform at an extremely impressive rate.
“South Staffordshire is a wonderful place to live and work, and the recent job fair, which was held in Perton, showed that there are a constantly growing number of opportunities for residents in the area seeking work.”
